Tips for Fall Maternity Photos

Unless you’re very good at timing out your pregnancy and nature follows along with your plan, you don’t have much of a choice in what time of year your maternity photos will be. If you happen to be in your third trimester during the fall, though, count yourself lucky! Fall is one of the most popular times of the year for portraits because of the stunning natural landscape, especially in beautiful Bucks County.

If you plan to have a fall maternity photo shoot, now is the time to start preparing! After booking your session, use these tips to make the most of your autumn maternity session.

Choose a Photo Location Based on the Timing of Your Session

So many people want to see lovely fall colors in their maternity photos. It can be tricky to predict when the leaves will change, but as a maternity photographer who knows my area well, I can help you choose the location that will look the best based on the timing of your photo session (for example, some areas may have lovely fall colors in October while others are at their best in November). Let’s chat about the type of landscape you want and what spot would give you the best look.

Wear Warm Fall Shades

The colors you choose for your maternity portrait wardrobe can make all the difference in how well you stand out. Think about the fall colors that will be in the background of your photos and choose colors that will complement them and that look appropriate for fall. Some of my favorites include:

  • Burnt orange

  • Cream or beige

  • Olive green

  • Navy blue or denim

  • Mocha

  • Deep red or burgundy

  • Gray

Don’t worry, this is also a detail we’ll chat about when you book your maternity photos.

Have Layers Prepared

Every Pennsylvanian knows that the weather can be very unpredictable during the fall, especially during the transitions from summer to fall and from fall to winter. I suggest taking a recommendation from the Boy Scouts: always be prepared! Bring layering items you can add that will complement your portrait wardrobe so you’re comfortable during the session. That could include a scarf, jacket, wrap, or even a blanket. Having layers of a few different warmths will let you adjust on the spot.

Communicate the Look You Want

There are so many ways to do fall maternity portraits! Are you picturing a rustic look with a relaxed feel? Maybe more of a dramatic style? Or perhaps something more earthy? When you book your session, have an idea of the type of look you want so we can create it together. It can help to look through my maternity photography portfolio and let me know which ones are your favorites.

Planning a Dreamy Fall Maternity Photo Session

Your maternity portraits give you an opportunity to not only preserve special memories of your pregnancy but also to enjoy some time celebrating your pregnancy and remind yourself how gorgeous you are during this amazing time.
