Tips for Choosing a Family Photographer

Updated: Nov 4, 2023

Over the years, family portraits will become some of your most treasured possessions because they let you revisit your kids’ younger days. If you want to create those cherished heirlooms to forever remember this stage in your family’s life, one of the most important choices you need to make is selecting your photographer.

The photographer you choose will affect the experience your family has as well as the look of your finished portraits. As a Bucks County photographer, I know the absolute magic that happens when a family and photographer have the right chemistry. How do you choose the best fit for your family? These tips can help.

Check the Portfolio

One of the first things you should look at when considering a photographer is their portfolio, the photos they’ve posted on their site, and social media. Photography is art, and in the same way that every painter and sculptor has their own style, every photographer has their own artistic style as well. Make sure the photographer’s style has a look you would love for your family portraits.

Aim for a Long-Term Arrangement

One of my primary pieces of advice for any family is to find a photographer they love and go back to that photographer year after year for their family photos and portraits of the family’s various milestones. There are multiple reasons for this.

First, as a photographer, I’ll learn more each time about your family and what you like in your portraits. Second, I’ll get to know your family’s personality and the best ways to make your kids smile. And third, your kids will become more familiar with me and will feel more comfortable with me, which leads to better smiles and better photos.

Take Price Into Consideration

I would never suggest choosing your photographer based on price alone, but I’m a parent too and I know that price does matter. Make sure you choose a photographer whose pricing reflects their quality but is comfortable for you too. You don’t want to max out your budget on the session fee and be unable to buy the artwork and images you love.

Find Out About the Process

Every photographer has a different client experience. For instance, some have a thorough planning meeting with their client while others stick to a simple form that asks you what you’re looking for from your session. Some photographers send you a digital gallery of your photos to preview and choose your favorites while others bring you in for a photo reveal appointment. Some photographers offer printed products while others offer digital images only. There are no right or wrong answers here, it’s just a matter of choosing what best fits your family’s needs and selecting a photographer whose process matches what you’re looking for.
